The University’s Black Advisory Hub is hosting the first in a series of seminars on Friday 13 October on the theme of language and race.
While attention is most often paid to racist incidents that involve explicit discrimination, less focus is given to the ways in which language and its use (or misuse) in teaching and learning contexts has an impact on Black students and their engagement with their studies. This series of four focus groups invites Cambridge students and staff to reflect on the power and impact of language choices on their educational experiences, the cumulative impact of everyday racism in choices of language in teaching and learning contexts, and the burden placed on Black and other racially minoritised students to educate others. The Black Advisory Hub will be hosting two induction events for new students. The first, for undergraduates, will be held on Thursday 19 October between 5.30 and 7.30pm in the Student Union lounge. The second one, for postgraduates, will be held the following week, on Thursday 26 October, in the same venue and at the same time of day.
On Saturday 14 October, Clare College is hosting a Black History Month formal and Open Mic night featuring Black talent from across the University. The guest speaker will be Akima Paul Lambert, one of the few Black law firm partners in London and a Clare alumna.
On the morning of Sunday 15 October, Chine McDonald, Cambridge alumna and Director ofChristian think tank Theos, will deliver the sermon at Great St Mary’s Church. The sermon is entitled ‘The Gospel of Liberation’. It will begin at 11.30am and the St Catharine’s College Girls’ Choir will be singing.
Homerton College will host its second Black History Month formal dinner on Wednesday 18 October.Last year’s event attracted well over 100 students and distinguished guests.
On Sunday 22 October, Professor Hakim Adi, the first historian of African heritage to become a professor of history in Britain, will deliver a lecture at the Winstanley Lecture Theatre, Trinity College. Professor Adi's book 'African and Caribbean People in Britain: A History' has been shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize 2023. The event runs 2.30pm to 3.30pm.
Monday23 October, is the opening night of the African Legends Art Exhibition in the Churchill College Buttery. Junior Research Fellow Ozzy Ogbeide's event - which begins at 5pm - featuresfigures from African mythology. Go along for the launch, meet the artist and grab a drink! The art will be displayed on screens in the Buttery from 5pm-8pm, Monday to Friday of this week.
Baldwin vs Buckley Debate, The Cambridge Union, Tuesday 24October, 7.30pm: following a critically acclaimed run in New York and London, the American Vicarious’ production of the historic debate between James Baldwin and William F Buckley Jr is re-enacted live at the Cambridge Union. Watch as the actors recreate this historic debate in the same spots where Baldwin and Buckley faced each other in February 1965. Book your tickets.

The University of Cambridge’s annual Race Equality Lecture on Thursday 26 October will be given byProfessor Robbie Shilliam of Johns Hopkins University (USA).Robbie is theauthor of the recently published book, 'Decolonizing Politics'. His research focuses on the political and intellectual complicities of colonialism and race in the global order, with a particular interest in the Rastafari movement. Following this lecture why not head to St Catharine’s College for Night Songs in the Chapel which will feature a repertoire celebrating Black composers?
Playwright Sabrina Ali, author of the multi-award-winning play 'Dugsi Dayz' will take part in a Q&A in the Adrian House Seminar Room, Trinity College. The event, on Friday 27 October, runs 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Also at Trinity College, actor David Jonsson, star of the film 'Rye Lane' and BBC2/HBO series 'Industry', will talk at the Winstanley Lecture Theatreon Saturday 28 October, 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
