One great theme to use in your preschool classroom or at home with your little ones is ALL ABOUT ME…because we all know how much preschoolers LOVE sharing about themselves!
All About Me is perfect for the beginning of a new school year because it allows little ones to share what makes them unique and special. It can also break the ice for students in a new classroom.

ALL ABOUT ME BOOKS FOR PRESCHOOL
I Can Be Anything! Don’t Tell Me I Can’t: I have to admit that this book made me tear up a little bit because I love the message behind it SO much! Zoe believes that anything is possible, but a little voice inside her head keeps doubting her and trying to make her afraid (I think we’ve all heard that voice before in our own lives!) But Zoe doesn’t let that voice stop her or hold her back. This is a wonderful book that reminds all of us we can achieve our goals and should be proud to be uniquely us!
I’m Gonna Like Me: Letting Off A Little Self-Esteem: This book is written from alternating points of view (a little boy’s and a little girl’s) and talks about how they are going to like themselves each and every day. Whether they get the answers right or wrong, are chosen last for a team, or run slower than everyone else, these kids are going to like themselves because they are loved and safe…and liking themselves is the best way to show it!
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon: Molly Lou is short and clumsy, has buck teeth, and a not-so-great voice. But her grandmother has always told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing loud, and that’s exactly what she does! When Molly Lou starts at a new school and a bully tries to pick on her, Molly Lou doesn’t let him stop her or bring her down.
I Can Be Anything: This would be the perfect gift for preschool or kindergarten graduation. A little boy wants to be SO many things when he grows up…it’s hard to choose just one! From barefooted hopper to bubble gum popper, this little boy decides he’s going to be everything he wants to be!
Marvelous Me: Alex is a super-special superhero named Marvelous Me! He can do super cool things, like reading comic books and counting the cookies in the jar. He loves himself and is proud to be uniquely him!
I Like Myself!: This book has the same illustrator as Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, which kids will love! The little girl in the story loves herself, even when she has messy hair or beaver breath. She appreciates everything about herself…inside and out!
I Like Me!: “I have a best friend. That best friend is me!” This super cute book is told from the point of view of a sweet pig who loves herself. She shares all the things she knows how to do, like brush her teeth and bake cookies, and she says “Hi, good-looking” when she wakes up every morning! This is a super cute book with only a few words on each page that will keep preschoolers’ attention.
I Can Be Anything: This is the third book on our list with the same title (it must be a popular title!) This book is by Japanese author & illustrator Shinsuke Yosh*take. Natsumi is supposed to be going to bed, but she wants to play a game with her mom. Natsumi pretends to be different things, and she wants her mom to guess…but the clues are so tricky and her mom can’t figure it out! This is a fun book to talk about imagination and pretending to be anything you want while playing.
Shades of People: Of all of the All About Me books that are on this list, this book is the only one with real photographs, which I absolutely love! The photographs show real kids on each page and highlight that we all come in different “shades” like copper, tan, rose, and almond! It reminds little ones that the diversity we see in our communities every day is beautiful and special.
The Skin You Live In: “Think how lucky you are that the skin you live in, so beautifully holds the “You” who’s within.” This book pairs perfectly with Shades of People. It reminds readers in a rhythmic way that we are more than just our skin!
When I Grow Up: This sweet book begins with a little boy asking his mom, “Mom, when I grow up, what do you think I will be?” Then he goes into all his different options…an astronaut, a musician, a baker, a teacher…so many choices! In the end, his mom tells him, “No matter what, I will always be there for you.”
Who We Are: All About Being the Same & Being Different: This is a wonderful book that explains how people are the same and different. This book is part of the Let’s Talk About You and Me series, which includes other books that cover important topics for kids, such as body parts, families, pregnancy/new siblings, and eating well/feeling good.
The Day You Begin: This is one of those truly special stories with beautiful illustrations & a powerful message. This story reminds all of us that there are times we won’t fit in for a variety of reasons. But instead of shrinking back, we can be powerful and use our voice to speak up…and that’s the day we begin to find our place in the world.
I am Smart, I am Blessed, I Can Do Anything! In this story, Ayaan wakes up feeling a little unsure of himself. He’s worried about going to school and not feeling as smart as the other kids. But on his morning walk to school, his mom points out all of the good things in his life and has him repeat his daily affirmations: I am smart, I am blessed, I can do anything!
We’re Different, We’re the Same, & We’re Wonderful: I love this book from Sesame Street because it talks about how we’re all different (for example, we have different noses) and we’re all the same (all of our noses are used to breathe, sniff, sneeze, & whiff). All of your favorite Sesame Street characters are in the book, like Big Bird, Cookie Monster, & Grover, so it’s sure to be a hit with any Sesame Street fans!
Giraffes Can’t Dance: This book tells the cutest story about Gerald the Giraffe, who really wants to dance…but with his long legs and knobby knees, he’s super awkward and clumsy. The other animals tease him, which makes Gerald feel very sad. But with the help of a wise cricket, Gerald learns that it’s okay to be different…you just have to dance to the beat of your own drum! *If you love this book, check out these activities we’ve paired with it to bring it to life!*
Ruby Finds a Worry: One day, Ruby finds a worry (which is illustrated as a small yellow ball with a frown). Ruby tries to ignore her worry, but that only makes him grow larger and larger! In the end, Ruby learns the best way to get rid of her worry is to talk about it, which is an important lesson for all our kids to learn.
A Bad Case of Stripes: Camilla was always worried about what other people thought of her. On the first day of school, she broke out into colorful stripes. But since she wasn’t sick, she had to go to school…and the kids laughed and teased her. They even called out things like “purple polka dots” and Camilla would turn into purple polka dots! After changing into so many different things, Camilla finally learns the lesson she needs to learn…when she was honest about what she liked/didn’t like & was true to herself, her stripes went away! (This book is better for older pre-k & kindergarten students. It’s a little long & has a pretty complex plot for younger preschoolers.)
I’m Happy-Sad Today: I think one of the best things we can do for our little ones is teach them that it’s totally normal to have more than one feeling at the same time, and this book does exactly that! It reminds all of us (kids and grown-ups!) that having two seemingly conflicting feelings at the same time (like happy & sad, nervous & excited, or scared & brave) is absolutely okay!
How Full is Your Bucket? For Kids: I love this book because it reminds kids that their words/actions affect other people. In this story, Felix learns that everyone has an invisible bucket over their heads. When we are mean to people, we dip into their bucket & spill water out. But when we are kind, complimentary, & empathetic, we fill up other people’s buckets. The goal of the book is to help kids become “bucket fillers” and not “bucket dippers.”
All Are Welcome: This is the perfect story for our little ones because it rhymes, it has colorful illustrations, and it shares the powerful message…All Are Welcome Here! I love how this story is so inclusive and reminds all of our little ones that they belong and are worthy.
ALL ABOUT ME BOOKS FOR PRESCHOOL
The Gluten Glitch: Gluten allergies (and food allergies in general) are everywhere, and they affect our preschoolers and kindergarteners. This story is all about Gideon, who is allergic to gluten. Gideon is feeling upset that he can’t eat the same treats as the other kids, but his mom reminds him why. They talk about what happens to his body when he eats gluten, and they brainstorm a list of foods he can eat. This is a great book for any kids who have food allergies (to remind them they’re not alone!)
Be You!: I am a huge fan of Peter H. Reynolds (in fact, I have many of his books on this All About Me preschool booklist!) and this is one of my all-time favorites. This book reminds you that you were born to BE YOU! It has the signature Reynolds’ illustrations & inspirational text on each page. This book would be perfect to give as a graduation gift, first birthday gift, or to expectant parents to read to their little one.
I Am Enough: I love the message behind this book! It reminds readers that we are each unique & different, and we are all meant to do so many things (like shine, dream, learn, try, and get up when we fall down). It all reminds us that we are enough just the way we are.
Princess Hair: “All princesses wear crowns, but underneath their crowns, not all princesses have the same hair.” This adorable story is about a variety of hairstyles, textures, and attitudes that princesses have underneath their crowns! From dreadlocks to curls to teeny-weeny afros, this book celebrates different types of princesses who all love their princess hair.
Princess Truly in I Am Truly: Princess Truly is confident, brave, and strong! She is smart, studious, and a natural-born leader. She goes on many adventures and is proud of all she can do! At the end, Princess Truly reminds readers that they can do all the same things she can do…because they are truly fabulous, too!
Not Quite Snow White: Tameika loves dancing and singing, and she loves performing on stage. When her school announces they’re putting on the musical Snow White, Tameika is excited to audition…until she hears the other kids say she’s too tall, too chubby, and too brown to play Snow White. After talking to her parents, Tameika realizes she has just the right stuff to be Snow White…and she gets the part!
The Magical Yet: This has quickly become one of my all-time favorite books! The first time I read it to my preschooler, I cried because the message is just as important for kids as for adults! When the main character tries to ride her bike & crashes, she feels like giving up. But then she meets her Magical Yet. Her Magical Yet is with her every step of the way and knows she’ll achieve her goals (even if she doesn’t believe it at the time.) Her Magical Yet doesn’t mind mistakes & doesn’t mind how long it takes…it knows that she’ll succeed as long as she doesn’t quit! This rhyming book is fun to read aloud and has great illustrations. I highly recommend it!
Say Something: Here’s another Peter H. Reynold’s book that I just love! This book reminds readers that each person has something to say. They can say things with their words (by standing up to a bully or sharing when they feel upset). But they can also say something with their actions (like painting, planting, and dressing in a unique way). This book also reminds readers that even though no one might be listening at first, keep saying something, and soon the whole world might be listening!
Listening with My Heart: A Story of Kindness & Self-Compassion: In this story, Esperanza finds a heart-shaped rock, which reminds her to be kind to others. It inspires her to befriend the new boy in school who doesn’t speak much English, and it also reminds her that she needs to be kind to herself when she makes mistakes or messes up. I love that this story encourages both kindness to others and kindness to ourselves.
Hair Love: I love this story because it reminds readers that our hair is unique and special to each of us. Zuri really wants a special hairstyle for the day, so her dad tries lots of different styles…but nothing is working. Finally, Zuri has a great idea…funky puff buns! Her hair turns out great, and she’s all ready for her big day…the day her mom comes home!
Thelma the Unicorn: Thelma is a horse who wishes more than anything to be a famous unicorn! When her wish finally comes true, she thinks she’s gotten everything she’s ever wanted…fame, attention, and adoration. But being famous isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and she soon realizes all she wants is to be herself again.
I Am Love: A Book of Compassion: This story teaches readers how we can all show love in our own lives. It reminds us that love is so many things…comfort, effort, gentle, creative, and so much more. This is part of an amazing series of books that includes titles such as I Am Human (A Book of Empathy) & I Am One (A Book of Action). I highly recommend checking them out!
Only One You: Papa and Mama say it’s time for Adri to learn some wisdom about life that includes being kind, standing out, and finding your own way. “There’s only one you in this great big world…make it a better place!”
The World Needs More Purple People: This book (co-written by Kristen Bell) is such a fun story about being unique! It teaches readers how to become a “purple person,” which is a person who asks great questions, laughs a lot, uses their voice, works hard, and acts like themselves (and no one else!) It’s a silly & humorous book that conveys an important message to kids.
Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes: In this story, Pete is walking along in his new white shoes when suddenly, he steps in a big pile of strawberries! Yikes! His shoes turn red, but Pete doesn’t cry…he just keeps walking along and singing his song. This happens a few times, but Pete never gets upset…because he knows it’s all good! If you’re looking for a book about being flexible, rolling with the punches, or just enjoying life, this is the book for you!
Strictly No Elephants: In this story, a little boy never fits in because he has a tiny elephant for a pet. On Pet Club Day, he’s excluded from the fun because the sign on the door says, “Strictly No Elephants.” The boy and his tiny elephant end up starting their own club, where they include kids with EVERY kind of pet imaginable! This book always makes me tear up. There’s not a person alive who hasn’t felt sad, left out, or excluded, so we can all relate to the little boy in this story. But he chooses kindness and braves the scary things (with the help of his tiny elephant), which is exactly what we all should do, too! *If you love this book, check out these activities we’ve paired with it to bring it to life!*
Chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemum loves her name and thinks it’s absolutely perfect…until she goes to school. After she’s teased for being named after a flower, Chrysanthemum has to learn to love her name again and appreciate her uniqueness! *If you love this book, check out these activities we’ve paired with it to bring it to life!*
The Dot: In this story, Vashti feels frustrated because she can’t draw. Her teacher has her draw a dot on her paper and sign it. Vashti realizes she can do better than that, which sets on a journey to make amazing dot pictures that end up getting displayed at the school art show. Then another boy tells Vashti he can’t draw as well as she can. So she has him draw a squiggle & sign it, showing him that he IS an artist.
Ish: In this story, Ramon LOVES to draw! He draws anywhere and everywhere, and it brings him joy. One day, his older brother makes fun of his drawings, and Ramon is crushed. He’s ready to give up on his art altogether, but his younger sister is able to show him that his art is perfect, just the way it is. Ellie: In this story, Ellie and her friends are living happily at the zoo. One day, their zookeeper, Walt, tells them that the zoo is shutting down. Ellie and her friends are devastated, so they decide to try and save the zoo. Each animal starts using their talents & abilities to clean things up, but Ellie can’t help like the rest of the animals. She’s feeling pretty sad about it. But when she paints a wall by accident, the zookeeper is AMAZED at her talent! It turns out, Ellie’s artistic talent is what saves the zoo! *If you love this book, check out these activities we’ve paired with it to bring it to life!*
This is Me: A Story of Who We Are and Where We Came From: Just a warning, this one is a little heavy! It tells the story of a great-grandmother who moved to America when she was a girl, and all she could take with her was one suitcase. The story goes on to show what different kids would pack in their own suitcases that represent them, and it ends with a pop-up suitcase that kids will love! It’s a great book to open up the discussion of immigration and family history with little ones.
The Word Collector: Some people collect stamps & other people collect coins…but Jerome collects words! I love this book to expose kids to amazing vocabulary words and talk about how powerful our words truly are.
Scaredy Squirrel: In this story, Scaredy Squirrel stays up in his tree all day every day. He’s scared of bees, martians, sharks, germs, AND tarantulas! But after he accidentally knocks his emergency kit out of his tree and jumps to catch it, he realizes he’s a FLYING squirrel! That’s when Scaredy Squirrel begins to change his routine and add in some more adventure to his day. *If you love this book, check out these activities we’ve paired with it to bring it to life!*
Except When They Don’t: I love this book to challenge traditional gender stereotypes for our little ones. It’s a rhyming book that has lines such as, “Girls think ponies are a blast. Boys like race cars, loud and fast. Except when they don’t.” It reminds readers to be exactly who they are and not worry about what they “should” like based on their gender.
Cam and Lex Adventures: This is the most special book on the list because it was written about two of my former students! Cam and Lex are cousins who are as close as brothers. They are each unique but also LOVE to do everything together…like going on road trips, swimming, camping, and spending time with family. This book (written by Lex’s mom!) reminds readers that family is truly the most important thing.
